General manager John Schneider has his work cut for him in the Seattle Seahawks’ first draft of the post-Pete Carroll era. The Seahawks have made a handful of inexpensive changes to the roster without investing in any external free agents on deals longer than two years. Because of this roster-building strategy, Schneider and coach Mike Macdonald have to nail their first draft together. They need short-term fixes on both sides of the ball, and they must also have an eye for their long-term future at some key spots. On Thursday, Schneider said Seattle might sign a veteran guard because the interior offensive line is still an obvious position of need. Adding a veteran like Laken Tomlinson (one of the top available players in The Athletic’s ranking of free agents, at No. 53), Mark Glowinski (No. 116) or Cody Whitehair would lessen the immediate need for a guard in the draft, but such a move shouldn’t dissuade Seattle from selecting one early.
